Well I had a frustrating day today gathering essentials for the week. First I went to F.D.(initials only not doing any free advertising here) only to find the dollar in D. should more correctly read "10 spot" and was not able to cross anything off my list. Then I went to Al*is for better prices on edibles and found better prices but I am getting more uncomfortable about the profits of this company going to Germany. I have nothing against Germany but there are / should be American discount grocery stores to compete with this world wide chain. After that I went to chain grocery in my area and still didn't find the last thing on my short 8 item list. I found a great deal on baby back ribs though and it a lot cheaper than the discount grocery store where you use a quarter to get a shopping cart. I also feel better about the profit of this sale staying local.
After leaving the second grocery store in search of B-1 vitamin, I walk further down the strip mall to the vitamin store only to be directed to yet another store because it is out of this particular vitamin. I do not want to go to another store because I am already frustrated at having to go to so many stores for such a short list.
I opted out of the bigger "one stop shopping" mega store because I know I am weak for a bargain. I find one or two when ever I go there and I could not afford to do that today. I decided to not go to the mega store to save money. Instead I spent more money, time and gas searching for 8 items on my list by going to 4 count 'em FOUR different stores. I could have saved money, time and still got a bargain or two EXTRA at the mega store.
I try to buy American Made but in a global market with a depressed local economy it is getting harder and harder to do so. The discount grocery has its profits go to Germany the local grocery has it's shelves stocked with affordable products mostly from China and big mega store has its stock from whoever will sell it to them cheaper. I look for Product of or Made in the USA on the label but it is difficult to find or usually significantly higher priced.
I want the mom & pop stores to survive and I want to buy American because I want to keep profits in the local economy but how do can I do this? How about if we as consumers take back control of the market instead of retailers dictating what it is they think we should buy how about if we tell them what we expect from them. That goes for goods and services. Now I am not hating on other countries and their products but our farmers need a good price for their crops just as theirs do and our manufactures need to keep operating just as theirs do. The only way I see this happening is if we start buying American all the way around. Food, clothing, services, goods and machinery. May be if we take care of our own and get back on our feet economically we can spread the wealth as it were, just like we always do. Any comments anyone ?

Welcome To FloriesDoor
Hi and welcome to my blog. I am new at this so please be patient. I know that I am one of a gazillion bloggers and I do not know how what kind of following (if any) this will get but here goes.
As I said in my profile I am 50ish and proud to live this long, but that is another subject. I am the sole provider for my household in a poopy Michigan economy. I have to say this is hard. I know it is hard for my husband for me to be in this position but we do what we have to do, don't we.
I work in a doctors office as a admin assistant. The description used to be file clerk but the government in its infinite wisdom chose to do away with this job by mandating that all medical files be electronic by 2014. If you have a lot of medical history I strongly urge you to get a copy of you chart before you doctor shreds it. It is also a good idea to get a copy of any thing you want to keep track of ie..surgery, medical condition or procedure etc...In this transitional state of employment I bought into a side venture of e-business. I hope that it will pan out because as I stated earlier I am the sole provider for my household and I cannot afford to waste money or time. I will let you know about this as it unfolds.
As a Michigander (not Michiganian) I am concerned about the present state of employment. My husband has been out of work for 3 years now. He was fortunate enough to have some retirement left but that now pays for his medical bills he has since he suffered a stroke. Maybe if enough consumers made an effort to keep jobs and profits in this country thing might turn around. Any ideas?
